DEAD MAN'S HAND

WHERE THE NAME CAME FROM:

il_794xN

19TH CENTURY

"Wild Bill" Hickok stands as a legendary figure in the American Old West, weaving a tapestry of tales that spanned the realms of a soldier, scout, lawman, cattle rustler, gunslinger, gambler, showman, and actor. His life on the frontier became a captivating narrative, adorned with notoriety earned through a series of famous gunfights.

Hickok's larger-than-life persona was fueled not only by genuine exploits but also by a penchant for weaving outlandish and often embellished stories about himself. While some contemporaneous accounts of his adventures may be recognized as works of fiction, they form the bedrock of his enduring fame and reputation.

The climax of Hickok's life unfolded in 1876, within the confines of a Deadwood saloon in Dakota Territory (present-day South Dakota). Engaged in a poker game, he met his untimely demise at the hands of Jack McCall, an unsuccessful gambler. The hand of cards he purportedly held in that fateful moment has etched itself into history as the infamous "dead man's hand": two pairs of black aces and eights.
